In this series we’ll choose two key plays from each game in 2024 that were made by Patrick Mahomes. This article will cover week 2 vs the Bengals.
2nd Quarter @8:57

Early in the second quarter Mahomes hits Rice on a 44 yard touchdown pass.

As Mahomes does his drop back he keeps his eyes down the middle of the field freezing the playside safety. Additionally the running back leaking out of the backfield gets the attention of the linebacker. This leaves Rice on an island with the cornerback as he races down the sideline. Once Mahomes gets to the top of his drop his eyes go to Rice who has the defensive back stacked. Mahomes unleashes the football and it falls right into the lap of Rice for a big touchdown.

Rice does an inside move off the line which forces the defensive back to open his hips and gives Rice a freeway to the end zone. Mahomes lofts a nice touch pass that is in stride and placed out in front of Rice, leading him into the end zone for 6.
3rd quarter @10:46

On a third quarter touchdown drive Mahomes delivers a short pass to Pacheco for a 13 yard gain.

During his dropback Mahomes keeps his eyes down the middle freezing the weakside linebacker. Meanwhile Pacheco leaks out of the backfield getting the attention of the strongside linebacker.

The center wraps around and blocks the strongside linebacker while staying along the line of scrimmage. This creates an opening for Pacheco who gallops downfield for a pickup of 13 yards. One more example of Mahomes manipulating a defense that leads to a big play.
