For this play the defense is in a 5-3 alignment; five down lineman, three linebackers and three defensive backs. This formation is ideal for stopping the run on short yardage situations but also accounts for a potential passing play. It utilizes larger bodies inside the box to make it not only difficult for an inside run but also for run blocking. Here there are two defensive tackles, two defensive ends and one nose tackle. The five down lineman are tight to the formation and are lined head up directly over each blocker except over the tight end. This allows each down lineman to punch or occupy the blocker in front of them. The nose tackle who is lined up in a 0 technique will occupy the center and allow for both A gaps to be open for the Mike & Will linebackers to shoot through and make a play on the ball carrier. Having both linebackers close to the line of scrimmage also accounts for the fullback who will be lead blocking. The Sam linebacker is backed up about six to seven yards off of the line of scrimmage to allow for extra run support at the second level. The safety can also come down and provide run support if the ball carrier breaks through the first and second levels.
