On this play the backfield wide reviever will shift behind the slot receiver (Running Back) to the weak side about five or six yards back. The tight end and backfield receiver will both run a curl route with running back going on a slant route. The split end wide receiver on the weak side will run a deep in route with the split end wide receiver running a deep post on the strong side. The idea is to get more defensive players underneath leaving the safety or deep defender one on one with the split end receiver. Ideally the backfield receiver is a speed threat and will automatically draw attention to whatever part of the field he is in. The stacked formation with the running back and backfield receiver on this particular play is simply window dressing.
